4 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Move To Australia!

I Know what your thinking… but the BAM’s love Australia, why are they saying we shouldn’t move?!

You’d be absolutely right, we do BAM-ing love Australia, but we also know that it’s not for everybody.  It takes a certain type of person and a certain mindset to upsticks and emigrate successfully.  We have been accused of looking at things through rose tinted glasses or that we’re not being honest enough with you, but truth be told we’re just telling you things from our perspective, and we’re pretty rosy people! But not everybody feels the same as we do.

The first reason why you may struggle in Australia is if you can’t adapt to extreme weather – when it’s hot, sometimes you could do with oven gloves to drive your car!  And forget walking on the road barefoot in summer – we’ve smelt tarmac melting on a hot day!  When we’re talking hot, we’re talking back-sweat kind of hot – to be honest I didn’t even know that was a thing prior to living here – it is as gross as it sounds!  And when it rains, flipping heck does it rain!  All of a sudden you can end up stuck in flash floods and it is just too unsafe to drive!

Obviously, there are things that you can do to adapt, such as putting a screen shade up in your car when it’s parked outside, letting the car cool down before you touch the steering wheel, although you probably will still brand yourself with the seatbelt!  Wear your thongs everywhere – dipping your feet in the ocean makes it a lot easier to walk on the hot sand!  And if you get caught in an extreme weather event, then just keep yourself safely indoors until it passes.

Number 2 is if you are not willing to embrace change then you will probably never settle here – you probably won’t be able to get heaps of the things that you’re used to in the supermarket, and yes Christmas is BAM-ing hot!  Your whole life will change moving to Australia, you don’t just move here and carry on doing the same things you’ve always done, it doesn’t work like that.  You have to adapt to different foods, different types of home and style, different activities and you have to make new traditions.  So all in all you need to be an adventurer with a gung ho attitude, with the expectation that you’re going to have to change your expectations!

Number 3 is if you are someone who just has to be close to your family.  We’re not all the same and there are plenty of families that live around the corner from each other all of their lives and they see each other daily – if this is what you need in your life then you would probably struggle without that.  That’s fine, but be honest with yourself, as emigrating is a long, stressful and expensive process – it would be pretty rubbish to go through all of that and then be miserable here.

We love our family dearly, and we love when we get to see them, but inbetween visits, we enjoy video calls and also stalking their social media!  This works for us, but it’s not for everyone.

Lastly, Australia is not without it’s problems, for example, currently there is a housing crisis – in many areas rents and house prices jumped massively recently, and in some places there is not enough housing to meet the demand.  Interest rates are rising and so too are the prices of pretty much everything (similar to what is happening everywhere else in the world currently).  Many people are struggling financially.

That last point feels pretty heavy, and it is a worldwide problem, rather than just an Australia problem – so what we personally say about that, it just don’t expect Australia to be without it’s problemos, be aware and be willing to adapt to what’s needed.  For example, you could broaden your search for housing, you could consider additional income, you could think about more sustainable living options.  And be sure to live within your means rather than taking on huge debts in uncertain times.  There are solutions, you just have to think outside of the box.
