7 Myths You Should Know About Before Moving To Australia!

Ben and I are committed to helping you with your move to Australia, and for there to be no wild surprises!  So, let’s bash some of those Aussie myths!

Myth 1 – The weather is Australia is great, it’s always hot and sunny!

While there are many beautiful, sunny days to be had in Australia, it certainly is not always hot, especially in the southern states, and we do even get grey days too.  From watching Aussie tv and films, it would be easy to think that every day here is a scorcher, but it’s a mix.

Myth 2 – If you want winter sports, you have to go to New Zealand.

Wrong again!  The Australian Alps are an incredibly popular destination for Australians wanting some snow with their sports!  The Aussie Alps actually receive more annual snowfall than the Swiss Alps!

Myth 3 – You can just pop to anywhere else in the country!

We’ve had a few friends visit Australia and say that they will pop in to see us, except they have been holidaying in another state.  Travelling in Australia is not always easy – for example, travelling from Perth to Sydney is not just an hours plane ride, it’s 4, plus any travel at either end.  If you wanted to drive, it would take you days.  Travelling to another city or state is not as simple as it sounds, and it can get pretty exxy, especially if there’s more than one of you!

Myth 4 – Australia is just a dry desert.

While there are huge areas of desert in Australia, there is also an awful lot of lush greenery, particularly around the coast, which is where most people live.  Here on the sunny coast, there is nowhere to be seen that isn’t green, there is certainly plenty of life.

Myth 5 – Koalas are bears.

The same as many people, we had heard of ‘koala bears’ many times growing up.  What we found really interesting while at a koala show in Australia Zoo, was that they are not actually bears, they are marsupials.  It means that they’re young are born immature, and then continue developing in the pouch.  The joeys stay in their mother’s pouch for around 6-7 months.

Myth 6 – Aussies drink Fosters

You can buy Fosters here in some bottle shops, but it is certainly not what everyone drinks, Fosters seems to be more popular with the Brits, maybe in part due to those awesome Aussie Agony Uncle adverts!

Myth 7 – If you come across a snake or spider, they will bite and kill you!

Snakes and spiders do their own thing, they are not interested in humans.  The same with many creatures, they may attack if they feel threatened, so it’s just best to keep your distance and leave relocating them to the professionals.  Many Aussies haven’t even seen a snake in the wild, so they are certainly not everywhere.  And the great news is, that many aren’t even venomous.  There are anti-venoms available just in case!
